Mixed wood finishes add personality: weathered-gray perimeter cabinets, creamy-white island cabinets, grey-washed chocolate finish on the millwork with a milky translucent glaze and natural, untouched floor boards reclaimed from French farm homes on the floor. The kitchen seats nine combined at the island and Banquette table.

Gorgeous stone fireplace, just needed some well-intentioned love as it was not the focal point. Notice the speakers hanging from the ceiling on the top right and left and the visual clutter of the high contrast between the trim/baseboard paint and air return vent and the dark paint color. To make space more cohesive and less cluttered and modern, the existing setup of TV's, receivers, speakers and remotes were streamlined into new componentry stack in an A/V closet, WIFI signal was protected with a wired solution that went above the ceiling. Speakers were integrated into the ceiling to provide high quality sound by zone.

After: A white marbled quartzite with white and taupe veining significantly lightened the space, as did a fresh coat of paint on the walls and the decision to paint in between the coffers on the ceiling. A new window treatment (matching to the mudroom) and the addition of a fish-printed chair brought some pattern and personality to the space without being overwhelming. To accommodate the need for more guests, we extended the island countertop to allow for 6 custom barstools to fit, created with a waterproof leather for wet and sandy kids. Artwork from a local Michigan artist above the stove grounded the space.

A recessed wall grazing strip light highlights the beautiful textures of glass, acrylic, wood, and leather. Since this home was newly construction, we did not want the new base cabinets to just go to waste. Instead we worked with them, matching our new wood pieces to the color and grain of the existing base cabinets. This was a sustainable way to reuse what was already there and create something beautiful.
